With the new year fast approaching, I thought it would be important to talk about reevaluating and resetting our goals. Like me, some of you might be struggling with achieving some of your goals and I am aware that sometimes it is out of our hand but, with a lot of them, we can do something about it.
Goals are important to have in life. They give us a sense of purpose and keeps us in check and gives us motivation in life.
In my opinion, I think the issue is taking time for planning, prioritizing and organizing that prevents from achieving goals. I was reading a few articles on the subject and it seems the steps to overcome this struggle are very similar to all of them.
Here are a few steps to follow to help with planning your goals:
Write down all your goals, don’t think too much, just put it on paper. All goals are good and an idea can lead to a better one.
- Classify your goals into categories and clean your list and keep the top 5 most important goals you want to achieve.
Putting them into categories will help you decide which one are most important then reduce your lists and keep the top 5 most important goals you want to achieve. Don’t have too many goals as it can be discouraging. Once you achieve one, you can go back to your original list and add another one in.
- Hold yourself accountable
Make sure you keep focus and discipline on your goals.
- Reward yourself
A good way to stay motivated is to reward yourself for achieving a goal. Chose something you really like and tell yourself, I will get it once I achieve my goal.
- Make it a habit
Make sure you do something to achieve your goals consistently. Consistency is the key to success. Don’t give up.
Someone sent me a message the other day with this creative way to planning goals from the Shari’s Berries Blog and I thought since a lot of us have the time off, it is a great activity to do during the holidays on your own or with friends over. For those who have kids, you could probably even turn this into a family fun activity making a family goal chart.
The idea is to create a storyboard that will reflect your goals/visions for the new year.
I really like the Berries.com infographic below. Very clear and simple to understand. You can visit their post for a detailed process on how to create a storyboard. A fun, creative way to plan your new year!
Hope I inspired you to set goals for the year!
